Foot & Ankle Fracture Care

A foot or ankle fracture is a partial or complete break in one or more of the bones that make up the foot or ankle structure. Fractures can occur from severe falls, sports injuries, motor vehicle accidents, or repetitive micro-impact from overuse (stress fractures).

Common Symptoms of a Fracture

Symptoms often manifest immediately following an injury and may include:

  • Severe, sudden pain and tenderness at the site of the break.
  • Rapid swelling, inflammation, and localized bruising.
  • Difficulty or inability to bear weight or walk on the foot.
  • Visible deformity or unnatural angle of the foot or toes.

Importance of Early Diagnosis & Treatment

Prompt diagnosis and treatment are critical to ensure proper bone realignment and prevent long-term complications, such as non-union, chronic pain, or post-traumatic Arthritis. Using in-office Digital X-Rays, our podiatrists precisely locate the fracture and determine its severity.

Treatment & Rehabilitation Options

Depending on whether the fracture is non-displaced or complex, treatment options include:

  • Immobilization: Protective casting, splinting, or rigid walking boots to keep bones aligned during initial consolidation.
  • Supportive Gait Alignment: Utilizing Custom Orthotics during post-cast rehabilitation to balance weight distribution.
  • Protective Footwear: Transitioning to supportive shoes selected from our Recommended Shoe List to protect structural stability.
  • Surgical Fixation: Realignment surgery for displaced or severe compound fractures.

Our goal is to help your bones heal safely and return you to your normal daily activities as quickly as possible. If you suspect a break, contact Southernmost Foot & Ankle Specialists immediately.
